Tips for Hiring a Summer Babysitter

summer_babysitterIt’s time to start thinking about hiring your summer babysitter.

School will be drawing to a close for the year and if you are a parent who works outside of the home, you need to start thinking about what the children will be doing over the summer.  Many parents do opt to put the kids into various summer camps, but if you are a busy working mom, then you probably need another set of hands to help you juggle schedules and organize the children when they are not in camp.

Many high school and college students will be looking for summer jobs, so the opportunity of hiring a babysitter during this time period should not be an issue. There are many ways to find the best candidate for your particular babysitter job, one of the best of which is to use a babysitting service. Here are a few nanny agencies and babysitting services that we recommend to help you find the perfect babysitter or summer nanny to look after the kids while they are on school vacation.

You might also post your summer babysitter position on Craigslist or in your local newspaper in the babysitter wanted or domestic help section. Be sure to use a descriptive title such as “Babysitter Needed for 3 Children for the Summer”. Many students will jump at the chance to do some summer babysitting and if they have the opportunity to secure a regular full time or part time job this would be very appealing to them.

Whether you choose to use nanny services, word-of-mouth or the babysitter classifieds section of the newspaper, you will want to conduct a thorough interview and screening process in order to find the right person for your summer babysitter position. One big advantage to using a childcare service, such as Sittercity, is the fact that they take care of much of the screening for you. Most agencies will require background checks, DMV records and fingerprinting.

If you choose to find a babysitter on your own, be sure to think about the particulars that are very important to you. It is not unheard of to let the babysitter know that you would like to conduct a background check and speak with their references. Seeking a babysitter can be a stressful thing because you want your children to be safe above all else. Spending the time to get organized with what your needs are and the sitter qualifications you will require can be well worth the time spent up front.

Summer nannies can be an excellent option when it comes to your summer child care needs, so do not let the work involved deter you from what could be a wonderful time for your children. Many kids love having a summer babysitter who is young, fun and interested in joining them in the quest to enjoy a few months off from school.
