Tips for Hiring a Sitter

Are you thinking about hiring a nanny or an au pair to look after your child while you are at work? If you are just getting started with this process for the first time, it can be a bit daunting with questions regarding nanny tax laws, background screening and how exactly to go about finding the perfect nanny for your child.

Some people would never consider hiring a nanny without using nanny services provided in their local area or conveniently online. This is because a nanny agency or sitter finder will do so much of the screening for you. Most agencies will require that  a potential candidate undergo a thorough background check which includes checking for any criminal records or violations that have to do with children.

Certainly you can opt to do this kind of screening yourself, and if you do choose to go it alone, it would be highly recommended. Hiring a nanny agency for this is by far the best solution of you are very busy and somewhat stressed out on a daily basis. This is not an unusual circumstance because it may be one reason that you are even considering hiring a nanny to help you with the day-to-day tasks that will make your life easier.

Regardless of the route you decide to take when hiring a nanny, conduct a thorough interview with any potential nannies in person. Have a good list of questions ready and be sure to ask for references. Even though the agency has probably checked the childcare references, you should also plan to phone of few of the applicant’s previous employers so that you can get a feel for how she was while working with them. Above all else, do trust your gut instinct when you meet the nanny in person. If for whatever reason you are not comfortable, you should not move forward.
